Escape from Reality, Rabid Dogs and People

It appears that just about every adult person needs an escape from reality.

Prescription and illicit drugs, from Prozac, Valium to Marijuana and Cocaine, the drugs help the mind cope with the fear and stress of life.

There is also alcohol, which more that a few would care to admit carries them through.

Others rely on natural highs of escape, meditation, marathon running, religion and faith.

Then there are the addictions to gambling, sex, shopping, stealing and other known escapes.

What is it about life that encourages people to desire a mental diversion from reality?

I saw a rabid dog one time, knowing the dog was rabid and that death was almost a certainty if the dog was to bite.  It sent chills down my spine seeing it.

Then there is the other rabid dog we fear, the human with ill intent on his or her mind.

Maybe it is people who drive us to push our minds away from reality.

It is all about fear and the stress it causes us by having to think about it, isn’t it?

  1. Humans have a long history with altering consciousness. Some do it to give them a different perspective, such as seers. But when I think of all the people that watch television every night, I think that it is for entertainment. To seek any insight out of shopping or drinking or promiscuous sex would take an extraordinary mind. At some point the person feels compelled to act in that fashion. Then the fear and stress part really take hold.
